How Many Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treatments Will I Need?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Many patients are surprised to learn that HBOT is prescribed as a series of treatments rather than a single session. This is because HBOT doesn’t work like a medication that reaches a therapeutic level immediately. Each treatment session delivers a temporary increase in oxygen to your tissues. That extra oxygen can help reduce inflammation, stimulate tissue repair, promote healing, and support new blood vessel growth. These biological changes are cumulative—they build over time. Patients usually are prescribed a range of 10 to 40 sessions. Our recommendations take into consideration the patient’s condition and are based on protocols established by clinical studies. These studies provide guidance on the number of sessions that have the best potential to achieve full physiological benefit. Generally, the longer a condition exists and/or the more severe it is the longer it takes to treat. Treatment is individualized: the patient is regularly reevaluated, and adjustments are made as needed throughout treatment depending on response.

Optimal frequency is daily, Monday through Friday. In some circumstances patients can do fewer than five sessions per week, or two sessions a day. Results take time: consistency and frequency are the two of the most important factors in successful treatment outcomes.

The science behind your hyperbaric oxygen therapy protocol: why it takes time to get lasting results.

One of the most compelling aspects of HBOT is how quickly patients can start experiencing its benefits, but repairing and rebuilding damaged tissue can take weeks. So what’s going on in the body as the number of treatments increase?

1-5 Sessions: Cellular Energy and Initiation of Healing Pathways

During the initial phase of HBOT treatment, patients often experience improved cellular energy and tissue function. Anti-inflammatory responses are accelerated and inflammatory markers decrease significantly, initiating the body’s natural repair processes. Muscular fatigue is often improved or even relieved, especially in trained athletes. Most patients begin to sleep better and deeper.

5-10 Sessions: Acute Injuries and Pain Relief

Acute injuries, especially those involving soft tissue damage and related pain, are often resolved with five to 10 treatments. For both acute and chronic injuries, the patient begins producing more stem cells from their bone marrow. Studies have shown that on average there is an 800%* increase in the number of stem cells with 10 treatment sessions. Your body uses stem cells to heal and recover, since stem cells transform into any kind of cell the body needs. Other significant processes are underway, especially the release of growth factors, healing molecular signals, and hormones that are crucial for tissue repair and overall recovery.

10-20 Sessions: Serious Acute Injuries and Chronic Illnesses

For more severe acute injuries or some chronic conditions, the 10-20 session range is recommended. HBOT works to correct underlying cellular and metabolic processes that no longer work as they should, regardless of the cause of damage. Once the cells have sufficient oxygen, the normal systems for healing begin to function properly. Mitochondrial function optimizes, and the cells now are able to generate more energy (ATP). Fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis increase significantly: both are critical components of wound healing. The new stem cells move from the bone marrow to the places that need healing.

20-40 Sessions: Major Tissue Damage and Regeneration

Some patients require as many as 40 treatment sessions, aimed at treating significant tissue damage and supporting the regeneration of new tissue through HBOT’s regenerative properties. In addition to all the changes described above, HBOT is causing the body to rebuild its capillary network (angiogenesis). This leads to an ability to continue proper oxygenation of the injured tissues even after treatments are completed. In order to heal, damaged tissues need both a sufficient oxygen supply and metabolic waste removal, so rebuilding and stabilizing this network is the foundation for lasting healing and regeneration.

Do Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy benefits last?

You’re probably wondering if the benefits of HBOT will last, and if so, for how long. The answer depends on a lot of factors, including what is being treated, the patient’s age and underlying health, their lifestyle, and how well they respond to treatment. The goal of HBOT is not simply to make you feel better for a few hours or days, it’s to correct the underlying dysfunction. When healing occurs, the benefits can last months, years, or even indefinitely.

That said, every patient is different. Someone recovering from surgery or an acute injury may experience lasting improvement after completing treatment. A person with a chronic condition, autoimmune disease, or repeated injuries may find that symptoms improve but can return over time as the underlying condition continues to affect the body.
